How to Draw a Ring Step by Step

This tutorial shows an easy way to draw a ring in four steps with a detailed breakdown of the drawing process and some quick tips.

As you can see in the above preview the ring used for this tutorial has a nice but very simple design. This can make it easy and fun to draw even if you are a beginner.

The one part that could be a bit of a challenge is getting nice looking circles when outlining the band. If you have a compass you may wish to use it to help you draw these. You could also trace over a round object for at least one of the circles and then use it as a guide to help you draw the second one. Of course you can also simply do your best to draw everything by hand.

Whatever option you choose it’s recommended that you start in pencil and make light lines that you can easily erase in case you make a mistake. You can darken them later on with a black pen or marker.

Step 1 – Draw the Band of the Ring

To draw the band of the ring you can just draw a large circle and then a second smaller one inside it. Careful not to make the second circle too small or the band may seem too thick.

Step 2 – Draw the Head

On top of the band add the head of the ring (the part that holds the gem).

You can see a step by step breakdown of drawing it in the example above. First draw the sides, then the top and afterwards erase the part of the band overlapped by the head outline.

Step 3 – Add the Gem & Finish the Line Drawing

On top of the head (coming out of it) add the outline of the gem. In this case it will have a very simple shape so you can just draw it as a half-circle.

Once done trace over your lines with a black pen or marker. If you don’t have one you can simply darken them with the pencil.

Step 4 – Color the Ring

To color the ring you can use pretty much any medium you like though color pencils may be the easiest option.

Make the loop yellow (optionally with a bit of brown as well) if you want it to look like gold. Another option is to go with grey if you want it to look like silver.

You can make the gem any color you like, in this case it will be red.

Also when coloring the gem you can leave a little white oval shaped highlight (light reflecting from it) to show that it’s got a shiny surface (as gems often do). Simply outline this very lightly with either a regular or colored pencil (that matches the color you picked for the gem). This will make it easier to color around it.

Conclusion

The ring in this tutorial has a nice and simple design that should be fairly easy to draw even as a beginner. Remember, if you find the loop difficult to draw you can use some of the options mentioned at the start of the tutorial to help you.
