How to Draw a Pear Step by Step

See how to draw a pear in six simple steps. This guide provides easy illustrated examples that go from a basic outline to a shaded drawing.

The example pear drawing is done in a slightly simplified style with a with black outlines and some details only being hinted at instead of fully drawn out.

The tutorial is quite easy and beginner friendly, however, you should start it in pencil and use fairly light easy to erase lines just it case a correction is required. You can darken them before coloring.

Step 1 – Draw the First Half of the Pear

Generally, pears have a thinner section at the top shaped a bit like a rounded off cone and a fairly round section at the bottom.

Outline the pear one half at a time taking the above into account.

You can optionally make a straight vertical line and draw the pear half to one side of this. The line will act as a guide that can make it easier to see if both sides of the drawing are relatively symmetrical. In this case the line is shown in blue but you can draw it using a regular pencil. Just be sure to keep it very light so that you can easily erase it once you have the pear outlined.

Step 2 – Draw the Stem

Coming out of the top of the pear draw the stem. Make this wider at the base and narrower as it goes up. Also draw the stem to be lightly curved to one side.

After you have the stem outlined, darken your lines by tracing over them with the pencil or a thin black marker.

Step 3 – Outline a Pair of Highlights Along the Pear’s Surface

Outline a couple of highlights (reflections of light) along the pear’s upper and lower sections. Highlights can look different depending on the light source but in this case simply make both of them loosely oval in shape. The reflections will help show that the pear has a fairly smooth surface. Placing them in such a way will also show that the light is coming from the upper left.

Either very lightly outline the reflections in regular pencil or in the same color you want to use for the pear (light green in this case).

Step 4 – Color the Pear

An easy way to color this particular drawing is with pencil crayons.

Make the pear a yellow green as is common for some varieties of this fruit. At first, leave the highlights white when doing so. Afterwards, blend some green inwards from the edges of each reflection to create smooth gradients.

Color the pear’s stem brown.

Step 5 – Add a Shadow

To give the drawing an appearance of volume add some shading. As already mentioned the light is coming from the upper left. This means there will be a shadow running along the pear’s bottom that then runs up its right side.

Create the shadow by going over the lighter green with some dark green and then some brown. Simply blend the shading inwards out from the edges gradually making it lighter as it goes towards the pear’s upper left.

Also, add a gradient along the stem by making its right side a darker brown that gradually transitions into the lighter green on the left.

Step 6 – Draw the Dots Along the Pear’s Skin

For the final step, draw some dots that pears often have along their surface. These are pores on the pear’s skin.

As mentioned at the start, the drawing is somewhat simplified. So instead of drawing these across the pear’s entire outline you can simply add them along its shaded side as shown in the example. Make the dots lighter towards darker near the edges and lighter as they progress towards the middle of the pear so they gradually dissipate.
