The bow tie in the examples is the kind that may be worn around the neck by butlers, intellectuals or someone going out for a formal dinner.

The guide shows how to draw the bow tie starting with the knot followed by the bows and folds. It then illustrates how you can apply some basic color and shading. In this case the bow tie is red but you can of course make it any color you like.

Although the tutorial is design in a way where you don’t necessarily need to erase any parts of the drawing, it’s recommended that you start it in pencil. This will give you the option to easily correct any potential mistakes.

Keep your lines light until you have all parts of the bow tie outlined. You can then trace over them with a black marker or simply darken them with the pencil.

Step 1 – Draw the Bow Tie’s Knot

First, draw the knot in the center of wherever you wish to position it the bow tie. Draw the bottom and top of it’s outline curving inwards and the sides curving outwards. Also, give it rounded corners.

Step 2 – Draw the First Leaf of the Bow

To one side of the knot draw the first leaf of the bow. Make it wider as it goes out and draw all of it’s sides to the curved outwards. Also, make it’s corners rounded similar to the knot.

Step 3 – Draw the Second Leaf of the Bow

Complete the bow by drawing the leaf on the opposite end. Try and make it close in shape to the first one but not exactly the same. To keep the drawing looking more natural the bow does not need to perfectly symmetrical.

Step 4 – Add Folds to the Base of Each Leaf

Once the main shape of the bow tie is outlined, draw some folds fanning out from each end of it’s knot. Make the lines that define them curved. Again, similar to the bow ends the lines don’t need to be symmetrical but try and keep their distribution fairly even on both sides for a nicer looking drawing.

Step 5 – Add Color

To color the bow tie simply fill it’s entire outline with the color of your choice. Markers, pencil crayons and paints can all be good coloring options.

As already mentioned, in this example the bow tie is red.

Step 6 – Add Shading & Finish the Bow Tie Drawing

Finally, to give the bow tie a more three dimensional look add some shading. To do so darken the following areas:

  • The edge of the knot
  • Around the folds
  • The base of each leaf
  • Upper and lower inner parts of the bow

Make the shadows narrower as they move away from the knot.

To apply the shading lightly go over the color with a regular pencil.

Conclusion

This tutorial shows an easy way to draw a bow tie. It’s step illustrate how to outline the bow tie’s different parts, how to add it’s small details and then how color and shade the drawing. Hopefully, you’ve found it easy to follow along.
