How to Draw a Coin Step by Step

This tutorial shows how to draw a coin in four easy steps. It provides illustrated examples and quick instructions.

This guide is very simple as all you need to create the coin is a couple of circle and a dollar sign. It’s recommended that you start the tutorial in pencil and make light lines until you have these outlined. You can then (optionally) trace over your drawing with a black pen or marker and color it.

Also, please note that the coin in the preview image is colored to look like gold but there is also a silver version shown at the end of the tutorial that can be done entirely in regular pencil.

Step 1 – Outline the Shape of the Coin

The first step just draw a circle to create the outer shape of the coin.

If you have trouble drawing circles you can trace a round object to create it. However, if you wish to improve your artistic skills it’s better to do it freehand.

Step 2 – Outline the Edge

Create a rim around the outer edge of the coin by drawing a second slightly smaller circle inside the first one.

If drawing freehand this step should be a little easier than the first one since you can now use the larger circle as a guide.

Step 3 – Draw a Dollar Sign

In the middle of the coin draw a dollar sign to show that it’s money. The dollar sign is usually drawn as the letter “S” with a vertical line (or two lines) through it. In this case the line is shown coming out of the top and bottom of the S but not going through it’s middle. This version of the dollar sign is also fairly common.

Once you have the $ drawn out you can trace over your lines with a black pen or marker as was mentioned at the start of the tutorial. If you don’t have either of these handy then simply darken them with the pencil.

Step 4 – Color the Coin

Finally color the coin an orange/yellow/brown so that it looks like a gold. Make rim and dollar sign a slightly lighter variant of the gold (almost yellow) and the rest of the coin darker (more orange/brown).

Alternatively if you want to create a silver coin you can just shade the entire thing with a regular pencil. Again, make the $ and rim lighter and the rest of the coin darker (as in the example above).

Conclusion

This tutorial shows how to draw a simple coin with a dollar sign (to help show that it’s money). You can also use pretty much the same steps to show something more specific like a one dollar coin by drawing a number with a smaller $ next to it. If you want to show cents instead use the letter C with a vertical line through it as well.
