How to Draw Mittens Step by Step
This tutorial shows how to draw mittens in six steps. It includes simple instructions along with illustrated drawing examples.
You can see the design of the mittens as well as the included drawing stages in the preview image above. If you wish you can simplify the tutorial by leaving out some of the details. Alternatively if you can also try adding a different and/or more complex design pattern.
Star the drawing in pencil and make light lines that you can easily erase in case you make a mistake. You can darken them before coloring.
Step 1 – Draw the Curve of the Main Part of the Mittens
Begin by making a pair of curves facing in different directions. These should outline the shapes up to the wrist on one side and up to the thumb on the other.
Step 2 – Draw the Thumbs
Add the thumbs as yet another pair of curves but make these much smaller than the previous set. Afterwards draw the bottom “cut off” of each mitten (where they go into the wrists). Make this area lightly curved.
Step 3 – Draw the Wrists
At the bottom of the mittens add the parts that go around the wrists as shown in the example above. It should be slightly thicker than the rest o the glove.
Step 4 – Draw Wrist Patterns
Onto the wrists draw a pattern of lines that mittens usually have in this area to help it stretch.
Step 5 – Finish the Line Drawing
To give the mittens a bit of a design draw another pair of lines on the finger area high up enough so that they are at about the level of tip the thumb.
As mentioned earlier you can try coming up with your own designs instead.
Once done with the above you can go over your lines with a black pen or marker. Alternatively you can also simply darken them with the pencil.
Step 6 – Color the Mittens
To color the gloves you can use whatever you like (colored pencils, markers or paints). You can also pick whatever colors you prefer. In this case they will be as follows:
- Red for the tips of the fingers/wrists
- White for the stripe
- Light blue for the lower half/thumb
You can also make the little stripes on the wrists a slightly darker red than on the rest of the gloves to help show that that area is indented.
Conclusion
Drawing mittens is quite easy but they can also look quite plain. However, your can make your drawing a little more interesting by giving them some sort of a design or pattern.
