This tutorial shows how to draw mittens in six step. It includes simple instructions along with illustrated drawing examples.
If you wish you can simplify this tutorial further by leaving out some of the details of the mittens. Alternatively if you want to make it more challenging you can try adding a different and more complex design pattern.
Star the tutorial in pencil and make light lines that you can easily erase in case you make a mistake.
Step 1 – Draw the Curve of the Main Part of the Mittens
Start by drawing a curve or a pair of curves if you are drawing both mittens at once. This should outline the main shape of the hand up to the wrist on one side and up to the thumb on the other.
Step 2 – Draw the Thumbs
Now draw the thumb somewhat similar in shape to the main part of the mitten but smaller. Afterwards draw the bottom “cut off” of the mittens where they go into the wrists. Make this part lightly curved.
Step 3 – Draw the Wrists
At the bottom of the mittens add the wrist areas as shown in the example above. It should be slightly thicker than the rest o the glove.
Step 4 – Draw Wrist Patterns
Onto the wrists draw a pattern of lines that mittens usually have in this area to help that part stretch.
Step 5 – Finish the Line Drawing
To give the mittens a bit of a design draw another pair of lines on the finger area high up enough so that they are at about the level of tip the thumb.
As mentioned earlier you can try coming up with your own designs instead.
After finishing the line drawing go over the pencil lines with a black pen or marker. Alternatively you can simply darken the lines with the pencil as well.
Step 6 – Color the Mittens
To color the gloves you can use whatever you like (colored pencils, markers or paints). You can also pick whatever colors you prefer but in this case we will go as follows:
- Red for the tips of the fingers/wrists
- White for the stripe
- Light blue for the lower half/thumb
You can also make the little stripes on the wrists a slightly darker red than on the rest of the gloves to help show that that area is indented.
Drawing mittens is quite easy but they can also look quite plain. Your can make your drawing a little more interesting by adding different kinds of design patterns onto them.
