A preview of the drawing steps for the pod and peas is shown in the picture above.

This is an easy tutorial but it’s still recommended that you start it in pencil and make light, easy to erase lines just in case you make a mistake. You trace over your drawing later on with a black pen or marker.

Step 1 – Draw an Outline of the Pea Pod

Begin by drawing an outline of the pea pod. Give it a pointy tip that is curved slightly upwards on one end and leave the other end “open” as in leave a break in the outline of the pod there.

Step 2 – Draw an Outline of the Calyx

Around the open end of the pod draw an outline of the top of the calyx, a set of little leaves that pea pods usually have in that area. You can make it’s shape similar to a bell that’s tilted on it’s side.

Step 3 – Draw Draw the Little Leaves of the Calyx

On the other end of the Calyx draw the outlines of three little leaves as shown in the example.

Step 4 – Draw the Stem

Coming out of the back/top of the pea pod add the stem. Draw it fairly show and narrow with a slight curve to it’s overall shape.

Step 5 – Add some Individual Peas & Finish the Line Drawing

To make the drawing look a little more interesting you can also add some individual peas. This step is of course optional and you can just leave the pea pod if that’s all you want to draw.
If you do wish to add the peas you can draw them as small circles. In this case there will be thee of them. Also please note that peas are usually not perfect shape so it can actually look more natural if your circles are slightly uneven.

Once done with the light line drawing you can trace over it with a black pen or marker as was mentioned at the start of the tutorial. You can also simply darken your lines with the pencil.

Step 6 – Color the Pea Pod & Peas

Paints or colored pencils can be good options for this particular drawing as both make it fairly easy to mix colors and to get lighter and darker variations of them (for pencils simply go over the drawing with one color and then with the other).

To color the pea pod and peas make both a yellow/green. Also leave a few highlights on the pea pod an one on each of the peas. The highlights on the pod can be added as one strip that’s broken up in several places (as shown in the example). The highlights on the peas should all be in roughly the same spot on each of them.

You can lightly outline the highlights before coloring the peas/pod and color around them. Afterwards also go over the highlights but with a much lighter yellow/green.

Conclusion

A pea pod and peas are fairly easy to draw and color. The pod has a very simple shape with just a bit of detail and the peas can pretty much be drawn as small circles. You also only need one or two pencils/paints to color them. If you have a light green paint/pencil color you can use those right away and if not you can mix yellow with a darker green.
