How to Draw Coral Step by Step

This easy tutorial shows how to draw coral. It consists of six simple steps that provide a detailed breakdown of the drawing process.

You can see a preview of the included examples in the image above. In this case there is no particular trick to drawing the coral. You can just outline it’s branches one at a time going bottom to top.

Start the tutorial in pencil and make light lines as you will need to erase a small bit of the drawing in one of the steps. You can darken them later on with a black pen or marker.

Step 1 – Draw the Base of the Coral

First draw the base of the coral that splits into two fairly short branches as shown in the examples. Try and outline their shapes with smooth curves and avoid any sharp angles or bends.

Step 2 – Draw the Lower Part

Above the base add another pair of branches that are slightly longer and point more upwards than the fist set but keep their thickness roughly the same.

Step 3 – Draw the Middle

Draw the third set of branches close in shape and length to the second set. However, try and keep the splits in them slightly different so that they don’t look too much alike.

Step 4 – Draw the Upper Part

Towards the top of the coral add a pair of really small (and slightly thinner) branches with one of them slightly overlapping one of the lower branches. You can erase a bit of the outline when adding it in.

Step 5 – Draw the Top & Finish the Line Drawing

Finally add the very top of the coral that splits into three. You can make this part slightly thicker than the branches from the previous step.

When done with the above look over your drawing to see if you’re happy with how things came out. Make any changes (if needed) and once you feel that everything looks right go over it with a black pen, marker or darker pencil lines.

Step 6 – Color the Coral

To color the drawing you can use just about any method you like (paints, markers, colored pencils, etc…).

Simply make the coral a solid pink and you should be done with the drawing. You can also use a different color or even a gradient (going from one color to another) if you prefer.

Conclusion

As the shapes of corals are fairly random you don’t need to be overly precise with your lines when drawing one. Corals do however tend to have quite few branches so it can take a while draw them all out. Hopefully the provided examples have made it easy for you to follow along.
