The example drawing is done in a slightly simplified art style. However, overall the spoon still has a fairly realistic appearance.

The focus of the guide is on first creating a line drawing with a shape characteristic of such a utensil. It then show how to apply some basic color and shading to the drawing in a way which will help convey the spoons text and give it a more three dimensional look.

All together, the guide is quite simple and beginner friendly, the entire drawing can be done in regular pencil. It’s recommended that you start with light lines that can be easily erased in case of a mistake. You can then darken them before coloring the spoon.

For drawing a fork see the following tutorial:

How to Draw a Fork Step by Step

Step 1 – Draw the Spoon’s Bowl

Begin by outlining the shape of the spoon’s bowl. Make this somewhat similar to an oval or an egg with a little gap in the outline where the spoon starts to transition into the handle.

Step 2 – Draw the Inner Edge of the Bowl

Add the edge of the bowl to show it’s curvature. Draw this close to the spoon’s viewer facing side. Leave little gaps between it and the spoon’s main outline from the previous step. The gaps will help give a sense of the thickness of the material the spoon is made from.

Step 3 – Draw the Spoon’s Handle

Draw the spoon’s handle curving upwards as it goes out of the bowl and make it narrower as it goes towards the back. Near the back the draw the handle curving upwards again but with a reverse of the previous curve. Make the handle narrower near the very back and give it a rounded end.

Step 4 – Draw the Edge of the Handle

To show the thickness of the handle draw it’s edge. Similar to the edge of the bowl position it along the spoon’s viewer facing side. The line that defines this edge should fairly closely follow the handle’s main, however, draw it slightly further away from it near the grip area to show thicker material in that area.

Step 5 – Color the Spoon

To color the spoon you can simply make it grey but before doing so outline a little reflection inside the bowl (as shown in the example). Leave this area white when you color. The reflection will convey that the spoon has a smooth texture and will help make it look shiny and metallic.

Alternatively, you can make the spoon a yellow brown so that it looks like gold.

Step 6 – Add the Shadows

To give the spoon a more three dimensional appearance add a few shadows. First, darken the sides of the handle and the under side of the bow. However leave a little light strip between the line that defines the bowls edge and the shadow. Next, add a shadow along the inner bottom of the bow that gets much wider as it transitions into it’s inner back area.

Conclusion

This guide demonstrates an easy way to make a slightly simplified but still a fairly realistic drawing of a spoon. It first illustrates how to create a line drawing with the shape characteristic of such a utensil. Afterwards, it shows of how to apply some basic color and shading to help convey the spoons texture and to give it a more three dimensional look. Hopefully you’ve found the provided tips and example helpful.
