How to Draw a Pear Step by Step

This tutorial show how to draw a pear. It consists of six steps with illustrated examples and simple instructions.

The example pear drawing is done in a slightly simplified style with flat colors (no gradients) and a black outline. You can often see this kind of art used in comic books and cartoons.

The tutorial is quite easy and beginner friendly, however, you should start it in pencil and use fairly light easy to erase lines just it case a correction is required. You can darken them before coloring.

Step 1 – Draw the First Half of the Pear

Generally, pears have a thinner section at the top shaped a bit like a rounded off cone and a fairly round section at the bottom. Outline one half of each of these to start.

You can optionally make a straight vertical line and draw the pear half to one side of this. The line will act as a guide that can make it easier to see if both sides of the drawing are relatively symmetrical.

Step 2 – Draw the Second Half of the Pear

Draw the second half of the pear’s outline mirroring the first half. The half don’t need to be absolutely the same but try and keep them somewhat close in shape.

Step 3 – Draw the Stem

Coming out of the top of the pear draw the stem. Make this wider at the base and narrower as it goes up. Also draw the stem to be lightly curved to one side.

After you have the stem outlined, darken your lines by tracing over them with the pencil or a thin black marker.

Step 4 – Outline a Reflection on Each Section of the Pear

Draw a couple of reflection to the upper end of the pear’s top and bottom section. Reflections can look different depending on the light source but in this case simply make both of them loosely oval in shape. The reflections will help show that the pear has a fairly smooth surface.

Either very lightly outline the reflections in regular pencil or in the same color you want to use for the pear (light green in this case).

Step 5 – Color the Pear

Color the pear a yellow green as is common for some varieties of this fruit. Leave the reflections white when doing so.

If you want the pear to look less “shiny” you can lightly go over the reflections with the yellow green as well.

Color the stem brown.

Step 5 – Add a Shadow

For the last step of the drawing add some shadows. Draw the main shadow running along the bottom of the pear, curving along it’s side and “dipping” in between it’s upper and lower sections. Next, add a thin shadow along the side of the stem.

You can create the shadows by lightly going over each color with  regular pencil.

Conclusion

This guide shows how to make a slightly stylized drawing of a pear with a couple of reflection and a shadow along one of it’s sides. The drawing is done using a technique called “flat colors” where there are no gradients used.
